Operation Nite-Lei
Operation Nite-Lei was initiated to address the growing problem of child labor at nights in downtown Apia where children (boys and girls) at the tender ages between 6 and 15 are seen early evenings until early mornings, selling leis in front of night clubs and hotels.
Operation Nit-Lei was a combined initiative by SVSG and the United Nations Program in Samoa to address this exploitation of children selling leis and other products at nights. It involves SVSG staff and volunteers going out at nights and identifies these child labors. SVSG bought leis off them, take down the details relating to children, their parents, their villages, their churches etc. The children were then taken home and the information goes down in SVSG’s database.
Analysis of the child labor from operation nite-lei database revealed that most of the parents of these children are unemployed. SVSG then solicited the church minister within these villages and arrange for awareness consultations for parents on income generating activities and the child’s right to education etc
