Community Legal Information Project - Canada/NZ
This Project commenced in October 2010 with receipt of funding from Canada New Zealand.
The objective of this project is to address the lack of accessible information on Samoa law and the Samoan legal system available to the community, particularly those groups who face economic, social or cultural disadvantage. A large portion of SVSG’s case work involves informing its clients about basic legal information (as opposed to legal advice, which is not provided by SVSG). This includes what actions are illegal, victim’s rights under the law, general legal information and providing court support.
Accordingly, the aim of this project is to prepare a series of informational brochures on key areas where people find themselves interacting with the law or legal system in Samoa and to make that information accessible to all communities within Samoa. The brochures would also set out key contacts, government and non-government, in the relevant areas.
Australian lawyer and SVSG Volunteer, Ms Amy McCudden, and Fetu Lagaaia of the Attorney General’s Office finalized 11 different information brochures in both English and Samoan.
The stands brochures were officially unveiled during SVSG's National Stakeholders Meeting with the following brochure topics:
