Baby James Simi

Baby James and his father, Simi, sought SVSG’s assistance in January 2011 for overseas medical evacuation assistance.

He is the youngest in a family of 4 children to parents Simi and Foisaga, both unemployed from Maninoa, Siumu, 'Upolu.  The family however relies on their plantation for living.

JAMES HEALTH CONDITION
James was born with congenital nevomelanocytic nevus (CNN), known commonly as the congenital hairy nevus, which is like a hairy black mole, that continues to grow and is now covering the left side of his face.

They have sought local doctors’ opinion and were told to wait for a Specialist from overseas to assess James situation.

SVSG’s ASSISTANCE
While James and his parents continued to visit SVSG’s office to follow up on James case, one of SVSG’s regular donors, Laulu Henry & Moana Westerlund donated funds to assist with Baby James case.

And with any SVSG assistance depending largely on assessment by Specialists, SVSG continued to advocate for Baby James and liaise with the National Health Services on the best way to provide him with medical treatments.

Baby James had also been enrolled in our Home School programme and his father brought him down from Siumu either two or three days a week to attend the program, check on the progress from the National Health Services and to replenish medication that he takes for rashes that affects him on a regular basis.

PROGRESS TO DATE
Following on from the support provided by Acting General Manager of National Health Services, Lemalu Dr Limbo Fiu, the incumbent Leota Laki Lamositele continued to assist SVSG in getting the required medical treatments for Baby James.

Later in July, SVSG received news that an International Specialist Team, specializing in plastic surgeries would be conducting appointments and eventually, operations here in Samoa for those with such deformities.

JAMES PRE-OPERATION PREPARATION
Baby James was scheduled for operation at 8.00am on Friday, 5 August 2011.

One of SVSG’s Church partners, Father Ben Tapelu of the Anglican Church Leifiifi joined SVSG staff for a brief prayer services for Baby James at the Hospital Chapel before he was due for his operation.  Both parents were present, and given the vulnerability of this infant undergoing surgery, the parent’s emotional state was understandable.

JAMES POST-OPERATION RECOVERY
James was out of the operating theatre at a little after 12.30pm and the family informed SVSG accordingly.

Due to his young age, about 30% of black mole on Baby James was successfully removed, with skin from the side of his stomach used to craft this area.  According to the Specialists, their yearly visit will see them continue to remove the rest of the mole.

SVSG’s Welfare Officer was called in to prepare the usual supplies for any of SVSG’s patient admitted to the Hospital.  The required supplies were provided and Father Ben also visited our courageous little boy during the time when he was hospitalized.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
SVSG would not be able to financially support and provide for Baby James and his family throughout all these times without the financial assistance from Laulu Henry & Moana Westerlund.

SVSG thanks you sincerely on behalf of Baby James for being part of the difference that we are making in the life of this child.
